Discharge of bilge water into the open sea, which contain more than 15 milligrams of oil per liter, is strictly prohibited by international law. Violation of these rules is punishable by multi-million dollar fines. For this reason, it is extremely important to use a bilge water separator on board, which must be properly tested and meet the requirements of international environmental organizations.

Variety of technology
To date, there are many variations of water separation, which can significantly reduce the content of oil products:

chemical cleaning;
membrane filtration;
gravitational coalescence;
adsorption;
centrifugal.
The above technologies, in addition to centrifugal cleaning, use unique techniques that allow for a short period of time to clean large masses of water.

If the separator cannot provide decent cleaning, then the vessel will be equipped with special accumulative tanks of the required displacement. That is, polluted water is discharged into these tanks, and then it is discharged in the nearest port for further processing by local treatment facilities.

It should be emphasized that the composition of the wastewaters on the ship is different from those that were several decades ago. Previously, it was the usual mixture of diesel and water, therefore, it was quite simple to separate them using the technology of gravitational effects. Currently, the situation has changed dramatically, since in addition to diesel fuel, water may be contaminated with chemicals, detergents, lubricants, additives. For this reason, a mixture with an unpredictable composition is divided into three components:

sediment;
oil products;
and, of course, clean water.
