A thruster is a device that is a cross-tunnel through, or pipe, located below the ship’s waterline and extending from side to side, with the propeller inside. When working, the screw creates a flow of water, the pressure of which turns the vessel in the right direction.
In a single-engine vessel, the aft PU is installed in the keel directly above the propeller shaft and partly in the hull of the vessel. This arrangement is very effective for the thruster. However, on a ship with two engines we are dealing with two smaller keels (water cut) and there is no central keel. The most effective solution to the problem in this situation is to use a retractable thruster. When not in use, the assembly of such a retractable thruster is located inside the hull of the vessel, and the surface of the hull remains smooth. To power the PU, it is pushed down by means of two hydraulic cylinders so that the screw is located in the free water. After performing the work, it retracts back into the hull, and the bottom of the vessel is again completely smooth. Such a retractable thruster is also a great solution for sailing yachts, because does not create on the way of the yacht under sail additional resistance, caused by the presence in the hull of an open through tunnel.
